Ateliers Associés: A New Horizon for Independent Watchmaking
A pioneering initiative, Ateliers Associés, is set to revolutionize the independent watchmaking sector by adopting a business incubator model. Conceived by industry veterans William Massena of Massena LAB and Louis Westphalen-Lemaitre, formerly with Hodinkee and LVMH's Gérald Genta and Daniel Roth revivals, this venture promises comprehensive support for burgeoning watchmakers and brands.
This innovative platform seeks to provide crucial capital, infrastructure, and specialized guidance to startups, in exchange for a stake in their burgeoning enterprises. Following a successful initial fundraising of approximately CHF 1.5 million from its founders and a select group of investors, Ateliers Associés plans to secure a total of CHF 5 million. This funding will grant investors privileged access to timepieces produced by the supported watchmakers, attracting family offices and strategic partners across manufacturing, retail, and auction sectors. The model involves acquiring minority equity stakes, capped at 30%, in independent watchmaking projects, aiming to nurture up to four such ventures annually by leveraging collective business acumen and resources. The inaugural project under this incubator's wing will be Mickaël Gaspar's "Souscription" watch, an endeavor a decade in the making, featuring a distinctive movement and a retrograde date function. Its full details are slated for unveiling in Singapore on November 12 during IAMWATCH, with a limited production of twenty pieces.
Looking ahead, Ateliers Associés intends to launch three additional projects in 2027, including a collaborative effort and a brand entirely conceptualized and managed by women. The incubator will finance the initial prototype for each project and deploy a dedicated operational team to guide its journey from design to production. Furthermore, an established independent watchmaker will join each year to mentor the selected projects. This approach signifies a profound commitment to nurturing the next generation of horological talent, offering sustained support beyond traditional competitions or luxury group initiatives, ensuring these independent creators can navigate the complex development, manufacturing, marketing, and sales processes.
The advent of Ateliers Associés represents a significant leap forward for independent watchmaking, offering a structured ecosystem where creativity meets commercial viability. By fostering new talent and innovative designs, the initiative not only secures the future of intricate craftsmanship but also enriches the horological landscape with diverse and groundbreaking timepieces, embodying a spirit of enduring legacy and progressive evolution.
