Basilia Watch & Jewelry Show Set to Revitalize Basel's Exhibition Scene

Basel, Switzerland is preparing to re-establish itself as a significant hub for watch and jewelry exhibitions with the announcement of the Basilia Watch & Jewelry Show, slated for April 2027. This new event, while distinct from the historical Baselworld, seeks to fill a crucial void in the industry by offering an accessible platform for a diverse range of brands, particularly those from Asia and other global regions. The show's organizers are committed to fostering connections between these brands and European buyers, in contrast to the exclusive, high-luxury focus of existing events like Watches and Wonders in Geneva.

The Basilia Watch & Jewelry Show is being presented as a fresh initiative, purposefully distancing itself from the legacy of Baselworld, a colossal event that concluded in 2019 after years of declining participation. Roman Imgrüth, CEO of MCH Group Exhibitions and Events, a co-host of Basilia alongside Informa Markets, emphasized that the new fair is not merely a reincarnation of its predecessor. He underlined the organizers' vision for a more inclusive and cost-effective exhibition model, designed to attract approximately 400 exhibitors and between 2,000 and 5,000 attendees in its inaugural year. The exhibition floor plan will allocate around half its space to jewelry brands, a quarter to gems and materials, and the remaining quarter to watch brands and industry participants.

During a media briefing in Basel, Imgrüth highlighted the collaborative approach taken by the organizers, including discussions with leaders of other major industry events such as Watches and Wonders, Vicenzaoro in Italy, and Inhorgenta in Munich, Germany. This outreach underscores Basilia's intention to complement, rather than directly compete with, established fairs, particularly in the jewelry sector. The demand for such a platform, especially from Asian markets, was a key driver behind the creation of Basilia. The show intends to cater to brands that may find the financial and logistical demands of more traditional, high-end exhibitions prohibitive, by offering affordable booth construction costs.

While specific exhibitors for the watch segment have not yet been named, the show could potentially attract major players who have previously sought alternative platforms, such as the Swatch Group, which withdrew from Baselworld in 2018, or prominent Asian brands like Citizen and Casio. Imgrüth reiterated that the objective is to create a vibrant gathering that celebrates cultural diversity and showcases unique products not typically seen elsewhere, rather than vying with the haute horology brands present at Watches and Wonders. The identities of participating brands and further details regarding the fair's structure are expected to be revealed in the upcoming months, ahead of the April 2027 launch, which will strategically follow the Geneva watch event.

The new Basilia exhibition represents a strategic effort to adapt to the evolving landscape of the watch and jewelry industries. By prioritizing accessibility, affordability, and a broad range of participants, it aims to foster new business opportunities and connections, particularly for brands seeking to engage with European markets outside the traditional luxury sphere.
