Bell & Ross BR-05 Chrono Snow Rocket: A Tribute to Speed Skiing

Bell & Ross has unveiled its latest iteration of the BR-05 Chrono, dubbed the "Snow Rocket," a timepiece dedicated to the exhilarating sport of speed skiing. This new model draws inspiration from French speed skier Simon Billy, who achieved a remarkable world record of 255.50 km/h in 2023. The watch distinguishes itself with a crisp white dial contrasted by vibrant red detailing, echoing the colors of Billy's racing attire and the pristine snowy slopes of his discipline. This distinctive aesthetic, coupled with specific design modifications, sets it apart from previous BR-05 Chrono editions, offering a fresh take on the collection's sporting lineage.

The BR-05 Chrono Snow Rocket features a carefully considered design that pays homage to its namesake. The red elements on the dial are a direct nod to Simon Billy's competition suit, while the white dial evokes the snowy environment of speed skiing. Black accents further enhance the dial's depth and readability. It includes a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o'clock and a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o'clock, with a central chronograph hand that interacts with an inner tachymeter scale, enabling the measurement of speed. Despite the chronograph's intricate layout and the bold color scheme, the dial maintains exceptional clarity, ensuring crucial information is easily discernible at a glance.

This edition introduces several notable changes to the BR-05 Chrono series. Most previous models utilized Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 o'clock, complemented by hour markers for the remaining positions. The Snow Rocket, however, showcases red italicized numerals across its dial. The hour and minute hands have also been redesigned in red, taking on an elongated form reminiscent of competition skis, departing from the skeletonized metal hands found on standard models. Furthermore, the date aperture has been relocated to the 6 o'clock position. This central placement of the date, flanked by the two chronograph counters, contributes to a more symmetrical and harmonious dial arrangement compared to the previous 4 to 5 o'clock date window on other BR-05 Chronos.

The timepiece is housed in a robust 42mm steel case, measuring 14.25mm in thickness. Its surfaces are meticulously finished with a combination of satin and polished treatments. A screw-down crown ensures water resistance up to 100 meters, making it suitable for various activities. Driving the BR-05 Chrono Snow Rocket is the automatic BR-CAL.326 chronograph movement. This movement is based on the Sellita SW510, which itself follows the esteemed Valjoux 7750 architecture. This represents an evolution from earlier BR-05 Chrono models, which incorporated a modular ETA 2894-2. Operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz), the movement provides a substantial 60-hour power reserve. Through the sapphire caseback, a distinctive red silhouette of a speed skier is visible, adding a final subtle touch that reinforces its connection to Simon Billy's achievements.

The BR-05 Chrono Snow Rocket offers versatility in its wear, available with either a grooved red rubber strap or a stainless-steel bracelet. The rubber strap amplifies the watch's sporty character and vibrant appeal, while the steel bracelet provides a more understated yet sophisticated look. Limited to just 250 pieces, this edition is a vivid and dynamic interpretation of the BR-05 Chrono. Its design successfully incorporates sporting inspiration without resorting to typical racing motifs, presenting a unique aesthetic. While the watch offers compelling design and performance, its pricing, set at EUR 6,900 for the rubber strap version and EUR 7,400 for the steel bracelet, invites consideration regarding its value proposition.
