Blancpain Unveils Lady B: A Modern Reinterpretation of a Timeless Classic for Its 70th Anniversary

Blancpain, a brand often associated with robust and technical masculine timepieces, is now turning a new page in its rich history. This latest offering, the Lady B collection, draws inspiration from a pivotal moment in the brand's past, specifically from a watch created in the mid-20th century under the visionary leadership of Betty Fiechter. This collection harmoniously blends the intricate mechanics of fine watchmaking with the delicate allure of jewelry, presenting a timepiece that is both classic and strikingly contemporary.

The new Blancpain Lady B, a tribute to the 70th anniversary of the original Ladybird model, is directly inspired by the 1956 Bullet variant. This vintage model was lauded for its ingenious strap system, which allowed for quick changes through a slot in the watch's back. Advertisements from that era proudly proclaimed the Ladybird as the world's smallest round watch, a "technical marvel" with a diameter of just 11.85mm. It was available with two movement options: the R55/52, featuring a conventional crown at 3 o'clock, or the R550/520, with its crown innovatively positioned on the back.

The contemporary Lady B, affectionately named after Betty Fiechter, reinterprets this historical concept as a petite, spherical, and mechanically driven jewel. Its case, measuring a mere 19mm in diameter and boasting a volume of just 2.9 cm³, comes in either stainless steel or 18k red gold. The two-part case construction ensures that the back is almost imperceptible when the watch adorns the wrist. An elegant opaline dial is complemented by polished stick hands and applied markers, crafted from gold for the gold versions and steel for the steel models, adding to its refined aesthetic.

Beneath its minimalist and pristine exterior, the Blancpain Lady B houses the sophisticated Manufacture Calibre 615. Introduced in 1995, this movement is one of the most compact contemporary automatic mechanical calibres, measuring 15.7mm by 3.9mm. Over three decades, the Calibre 615 has undergone continuous improvements, notably incorporating a silicon balance spring. It operates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides a reliable power reserve of 40 hours, indicating both the hours and minutes with precision.

Enhancing its feminine elegance, the watch is paired with an interchangeable double-tour calf leather strap, secured by a pin buckle that matches the case material. This strap is offered in a vibrant palette of seven colors: white, beige, mocha, burgundy, blue, coral, and purple. The absence of traditional lugs, with the strap threading directly through an opening in the caseback, allows wearers to effortlessly personalize their timepiece to suit their mood, attire, or any occasion. The Blancpain Lady B is a permanent addition to the collection, priced at CHF 9,500 for the stainless steel model and CHF 14,500 for the 18k red gold variant.
