Bravur Unveils Team Heritage Watches: A Homage to Cycling Legends

Bravur has launched its new Team Heritage collection, a quartet of watches that pays homage to the legendary cycling teams of yesteryear. Each timepiece captures the essence and vibrant colors of the iconic jerseys worn by St. Raphaël, Peugeot, Renault, and Mercier, offering a blend of nostalgic design and contemporary watchmaking. These watches are not just instruments for telling time; they are wearable pieces of cycling history, meticulously crafted to evoke the spirit of an era when professional cyclists were true heroes and their team kits were instantly recognizable.

The collection draws inspiration from the peloton, though these watches are designed for discerning enthusiasts rather than actual pro racers. The idea of Bravur sponsoring a cycling team, perhaps with a partner like Volvo, and outfitting riders with lightweight carbon versions of these watches, is a compelling vision for the future. For now, the focus is on the present, with four retro-inspired timepieces that beautifully encapsulate the past. Each watch in the series features a 37mm stainless steel case with an 18mm lug spacing, housing a Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement, known for its reliability and 41-hour power reserve. This movement is hand-assembled in Båstad, Sweden, underscoring the brand's commitment to quality. The watches are also water-resistant to 100 meters, making them suitable for everyday wear, even after a rigorous ride.

The Team Heritage STR model, named after the St. Raphaël cycling team, leads the collection. Its dial, with red and blue circles against a silvery-white background, mirrors the team's historic jersey. St. Raphaël, famous in the late 1950s and early 1960s, boasted legendary rider Jacques Anquetil, the first five-time Tour de France winner. Anquetil, or "Monsieur Chrono," was renowned for his exceptional time-trial abilities and stylish demeanor. Wearing the STR watch is meant to evoke the elegance and prowess of this cycling icon.

Following closely is the Team Heritage REN, which embodies the distinctive yellow, black, and white design of the Renault team. This team, dominant from 1978 to 1983, featured stars like Bernard Hinault, Laurent Fignon, and Greg Lemond. The watch's sandwich dial showcases the Renault stripes, and its spoke-like pattern creates an illusion of motion. It comes with a black perforated leather strap for a vintage feel, with an optional rubber strap available for a more modern, sporty look.

The Team Heritage PEU celebrates the most successful team in cycling history, Peugeot, and its iconic checkerboard pattern. This design was a trademark of the team's jersey from 1963 to 1986 and was worn by cycling legends such as Eddy "De Kannibaal" Merckx. The watch's dial features black squares marking the hours and a subtle checkerboard pattern at 12 o'clock, enhancing legibility and character. Green accents on the hour markers are a subtle nod to the BP logo that once adorned the team's jerseys.

Finally, the Team Heritage MER, with its unique purple and yellow dial, pays tribute to the Mercier team. Established in 1933, the French Mercier team was home to Raymond Poulidor, affectionately known as "Poupou," a celebrated rider who, despite never winning the Tour de France, achieved immense popularity and numerous victories throughout his 17-year career. The watch's dial features a mix of concentric brushing and frosted surfaces, with yellow accents on the chamfered chapter ring, reflecting the team jersey's sleeves and collar.

The dials of all four models are equipped with rhodium-plated hour and minute hands filled with Super-LumiNova BGW9, ensuring excellent readability in various lighting conditions. While the central seconds hands don't illuminate, they contribute to the watches' striking appearance. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these timepieces offer customization options with steel or black PVD-treated steel cases and a choice of FKM rubber or leather straps, as well as a Milanese mesh bracelet. Each watch is presented in a specially designed, hand-crafted leather case that doubles as a handlebar bag, further enhancing its cycling theme. The collection successfully translates the rich history and distinctive visual identities of these legendary cycling teams into elegant and functional wristwatches, appealing to both cycling aficionados and those who appreciate unique, historically inspired designs.
