British Hallmarking Council Initiates Consultation on Hallmarking Act Modernization

The British Hallmarking Council (BHC) has initiated a nationwide consultation to gather extensive feedback from professionals in the UK's precious metals industry. This vital exercise seeks to understand the current operational nuances of hallmarking and identify areas within the Hallmarking Act 1973 that require clarification or modernization. This move comes as a direct response to the government's decision to dissolve the BHC, necessitating revisions to the existing regulatory framework to accommodate new arrangements.

The consultation targets a broad spectrum of the UK trade, including jewelry designers, manufacturers, retailers, silversmiths, repairers, bullion dealers, antique specialists, horologists, and associated service providers. The objective is to construct a comprehensive understanding of how hallmarking functions within the sector today and to pinpoint potential regulatory enhancements or clarifications that would benefit the industry. The insights derived from this process will be instrumental in shaping the BHC's recommendations for regulatory reform, which will subsequently be presented to the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).
