Czapek & Cie., a brand that emerged from the legacy of Polish émigré François Czapek and his partnership with Antoni Patek in the mid-1800s, is celebrating a decade since its revitalization. Under the leadership of entrepreneurs Harry Guhl and Xavier de Roquemaurel, alongside watchmaker Sébastien Follonier, Czapek quickly gained recognition, securing the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) Public Prize in its relaunch year. Following a period of significant demand, particularly for its Antarctique sportswatch, the brand now introduces a new timepiece, the 'Time Jumper', alongside its tenth in-house movement. This debut jumping hour watch, featuring a distinctive half-hunter case, was showcased at Dubai Watch Week, symbolizing Czapek's continued innovation and dedication to horological artistry.

Introducing Czapek's 'Time Jumper' with Innovative Caliber 10

Czapek's latest creation, the 'Time Jumper' watch, embodies a seamless fusion of traditional horological techniques with contemporary design and engineering. Available in both robust steel and luxurious yellow gold, this watch reinterprets Czapek's historical pocket watch aesthetics through its striking half-hunter case, making it a remarkably wearable modern luxury timepiece.

The watch’s design is a testament to Czapek's commitment to unique craftsmanship. The half-hunter case, adorned with a captivating vortex-like guilloché inlay crafted by Swiss artisans at Metalem, features two strategic cutouts. A prominent domed magnifier on the case's exterior elegantly displays the 24-hour function when closed, while a gracefully curved aperture below reveals the minutes. A subtle oblong button positioned between the lower lugs facilitates the opening of the hinged cover, unveiling the sophisticated in-house Caliber 10 movement. The mirror-polished underside of the case lid beautifully reflects the intricate mechanics within.

Crafted by Czapek's Swiss partner, AB Concept, the polished case boasts compact dimensions, measuring 40.5 millimeters in diameter and 42.4 mm from lug tip to lug tip. Its svelte profile, at 10.5 millimeters (or 12.35 mm including the magnifying crystal), ensures a comfortable fit for diverse wrist sizes. Czapek plans to produce the 'Time Jumper' as a limited edition, with 100 pieces in steel and 30 in yellow gold. The steel variant is priced at CHF 42,000, while the gold version commands CHF 64,000. Additionally, 50 more pieces featuring the Caliber 10 movement are slated for special projects and bespoke customizations, honoring the brand's founding 180 years ago in 1845.

Xavier de Roquemaurel, Czapek's Chief Executive, envisions the Caliber 10—officially designated Caliber 10.01 in its current iteration—as a foundational movement for future innovations. He likens it to an “Abraham,” a progenitor of many subsequent horological creations. This self-winding movement, powered by a platinum rotor, is fully visible through the hinged case and the sapphire crystal caseback. The skeletonized mechanism showcases finished sapphire jumping hour wheels and a rotating blue outer minutes ring. Operating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 VpH), it offers a reliable 60-hour power reserve.

The movement’s finishing techniques are exquisite, featuring sandblasted and circular polished, rhodium-plated bridges with meticulous beveling, complemented by black polished springs. This interplay creates a visually rich landscape of contrasting levels, finishes, and textures that invite detailed examination under a loupe. Both the steel and 18-karat 3N yellow gold models come with 19-millimeter lug widths and are fitted with a blue rubber strap, chosen for its comfort and ability to convey a sense of relaxed sophistication. While prototypes at Dubai Watch Week experienced minor issues with the jumping hour mechanism due to extensive handling, Czapek assures that these have been rectified, and the production models, expected in Q2 next year, will function flawlessly. The 'Time Jumper' stands as an impressive new chapter for Czapek, marking a decade of innovation with a watch that is both a tribute to its past and a beacon for its future.

The Czapek 'Time Jumper' is more than just a watch; it's a statement of artistic horology and a testament to the brand's enduring spirit of innovation. Its half-hunter case, reminiscent of classic pocket watches yet imbued with a contemporary flair, offers a delightful surprise with its hidden movement. The interplay of traditional guilloché and modern materials, coupled with the ingenious jumping hour display, creates a piece that is both intellectually stimulating and visually captivating. For watch enthusiasts, it represents a brand that, against all odds, has not only revived a historic name but has also established itself as a trendsetter in the independent watchmaking scene. This watch encourages us to appreciate the intricate dance between heritage and modernity, reminding us that true craftsmanship often lies in the harmonious blend of old and new.
