Future Jewelers Academy: Fostering Skills and Community Through 'Weld and Wear'

A recent initiative saw the Future Jewelers Academy, in partnership with the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation and Michelle Greene Sculptures, deliver a dynamic 'Weld and Wear' workshop. This complimentary two-day event, held on August 8 and 15, 2026, welcomed 16 individuals, primarily young women and their family members, to immerse themselves in practical instruction covering welding techniques, jewelry crafting, and creative design principles.

The program was hosted at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and received support from NYC Her Future, an initiative championed by the NYC Mayor’s Office of Equity and Racial Justice. 'Weld and Wear' was integrated into the Navy Yard's ongoing efforts to enhance workforce development, aiming to bridge local talent with valuable skills and employment prospects within its thriving industrial ecosystem. Participants had the opportunity to explore the synergy between industrial craftsmanship and artistic expression. Michelle Greene Sculptures guided attendees through the welding segment, focusing on essential safety protocols and TIG welding as they constructed jewelry displays. Following this, Future Jewelers Academy provided the curriculum and necessary resources for the jewelry-making component.

During the Future Jewelers Academy sessions, attendees engaged in crafting personalized keychains by meticulously cutting brass metal sheets based on their hand-drawn designs, each holding personal significance for mothers/guardians and their daughters. They also fashioned rings or pendants using silver clay, with options to incorporate gemstones or create pieces that truly reflected their individuality. These introductory projects not only familiarized participants with fundamental jewelry-making processes but also allowed each person to leave with a unique, self-made item. Malyia McNaughton, president of Future Jewelers Academy, emphasized that these experiences offer participants a chance to uncover new skills and potential career paths, fostering confidence and deeper connections within the community.
