Historic Jewels Take Center Stage at Bonhams' Auction, Featuring a 1920s Boucheron Tiara
A remarkable diamond bandeau tiara, crafted by Boucheron in 1924, is poised to be the star attraction at Bonhams' Exceptional Jewels auction on June 11. This exquisite piece, which has remained out of public view for decades, carries an estimated value ranging from approximately $270,000 to $400,000. Its delicate openwork design showcases gracefully flowing scrolls, intricate quatrefoil motifs, and artfully stylized olive leaves, all culminating in a central 3.6-carat old brilliant-cut pear-shaped diamond. The tiara's creation was reportedly commissioned by Boucheron specifically for a family wedding, adding a touch of personal history to its allure.
Jennifer Tonkin, Bonhams' U.K. head of jewelry, emphasized the auction's breadth, noting that it brings together six distinguished private collections. These collections offer a diverse selection of antique, 20th-century, and celebrated designer jewels. Among the other notable items is a Belle Époque seed pearl and diamond sautoir by Cartier, originating from the estate of the renowned Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba (1861–1931). This elegant necklace, signed Cartier Paris, is valued between $80,000 and $110,000 and features seed pearl links interspersed with millegrain-set diamond spacers, suspending a captivating pierced circular diamond pendant. Furthermore, a diamond jewel containing a miniature watercolor portrait of Emperor Alexander I of Russia, believed to be a diplomatic offering from his 1814 state visit to England, will also be presented. This historically significant piece, offered from the Sidmouth family, is encircled by four cushion-cut diamonds ranging from 1.1 to 2.8 carats, complemented by approximately 18.75 carats of old brilliant diamonds. The Sidmouth collection also includes an 1870 gold flexible-link bracelet, convertible into a brooch and hair ornaments, adorned with over 21 carats of diamonds, and a pair of 19th-century diamond pendant earrings.
The Bonhams' Exceptional Jewels sale presents a rare opportunity for enthusiasts and collectors to acquire pieces that not only possess inherent beauty and craftsmanship but also carry rich historical narratives, spanning from the Napoleonic era to the modern age. The inclusion of items from esteemed private collections underscores the unique and diverse offerings available, showcasing elaborate diamond creations, prominent colored gemstones, and masterpieces from celebrated jewelry houses.
