IWC Unveils All-Black Portugieser Chronograph in Ceratanium: A Bold New Era

Feb 26, 2026, 2:42 PM

IWC has introduced an all-black Portugieser Chronograph crafted from Ceratanium, marking a significant evolution for a collection typically known for its refined and classic designs. This innovative material, previously exclusive to IWC's Pilot's Watch series, offers superior lightness and scratch resistance, transforming the Portugieser's aesthetic into a more contemporary and robust form. This limited edition comprises 1,500 pieces, each promising a distinctive presence.

The new Ceratanium Portugieser Chronograph retains the collection's hallmark dimensions, measuring 41mm in diameter and 13.1mm in thickness, which is notably svelte for an automatic chronograph. Powering this timepiece is the consistent caliber 69355, an automatic column-wheel chronograph movement operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, equipped with 27 jewels, and providing a 46-hour power reserve. While the movement and the dial's familiar layout—featuring prominent Arabic numerals and vertically aligned sub-dials—remain, the overall visual impact is dramatically altered by the watch's entirely black finish. The matte black main dial is accented by lustrous azurage sub-dials, with polished leaf hands and applied numerals offering a subtle contrast against the dark background, ensuring readability despite the monochromatic scheme. The watch is completed with a textured black rubber strap and a matching Ceratanium pin buckle, priced at €15,000.

This innovative interpretation imbues the Portugieser with a sportier character, suitable for diverse activities, including swimming, thanks to its 3-bar water resistance. The smoky sapphire case back further integrates the movement into the watch's dark aesthetic, enhancing its sleek, unified appearance. This release showcases IWC’s commitment to pushing boundaries while honoring the heritage of its iconic models, demonstrating that even classics can embrace modern innovation.

This new IWC Portugieser Chronograph in Ceratanium serves as a powerful reminder that tradition and innovation can coalesce, forging a future where iconic designs are reimagined without losing their soul. It encourages us to appreciate the beauty in reinvention and the courage to embrace change, proving that growth often lies in challenging established norms while staying true to underlying excellence.
