Lang & Heyne Introduces the Friedrich III Power Reserve Watch

Lang & Heyne, a distinguished name in independent watchmaking with roots near Dresden since 2001, consistently delivers timepieces that marry traditional German design principles with intricate hand-finishing. The manufacturer names its collections after historical figures from the House of Wettin, the venerable Saxon dynasty. The Friedrich III, initially launched over a decade ago, is an elegant time-only watch that has seen various case and dial interpretations. This esteemed collection now welcomes a new complication: the Friedrich III Power Reserve, or “Gangreserve” in German, which brings more than just an additional display to the brand's hand-wound offerings.

The new Friedrich III Power Reserve maintains the signature case dimensions of its predecessors, measuring 39.2mm in diameter and 10.5mm in thickness, perfect for a sophisticated dress watch. The fully polished case, available in 18ct rose gold or 950 platinum, is distinguished by Lang & Heyne's iconic triple-lug construction. The central lug, being shorter and recessed, integrates seamlessly, preserving the watch's refined profile while offering a unique brand identifier. Clients also have the option to customize for a more conventional two-lug configuration. The watch features an onion-style crown nestled between subtle crown guards, with sapphire crystals on both sides, enhanced with anti-reflective treatment, and boasts a water resistance of 30 meters.

The dial of this timepiece introduces a new indication while preserving the refined aesthetic of the Friedrich III. It is a multi-part ceramic dial, flat-polished, with a central decorative medallion featuring a delicate givré texture that complements the case metal. Elongated Roman numerals are engraved and filled with black lacquer, while the minute and power reserve markers are available in either red or blue, depending on the specific model. Broad, spade-shaped hands, in blued steel or gold, mark the hours and minutes, and the distinctive large running seconds display remains at 6 o'clock, with a hand designed to match the central handset. The power reserve indicator, located at 12 o'clock, features a graduated scale divided into ten segments, using the German terms “Ab” for empty and “Auf” for full. The scale begins with a series of diminishing dots, evoking the classic marine chronometer aesthetic, and the power reserve hand is always crafted from heat-blued steel. Powering this intricate mechanism is the new LH Caliber VI-II, an evolution of the established Caliber VI. This manually wound movement, measuring 33.5mm in diameter and 4.9mm thick, operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers a substantial 55-hour power reserve. A key innovation is the upgraded power reserve system, which incorporates a differential mechanism to precisely track both the mainspring barrel’s winding state and the ratchet wheel’s motion, integrating these two data points onto a single axis. This differential mechanism, mounted under its own bridge, ensures that the wearer is accurately informed of the watch's energy state, prompting winding before the mainspring's force diminishes. The calibre's traditional finishing is visible through the sapphire case back, revealing a hand-engraved balance cock, polished bevels, and sharp internal angles, all meticulously completed by hand. Comprising 174 parts, 27 rubies, and a brilliant-cut diamond end stone over the balance staff, this movement exemplifies Lang & Heyne’s dedication to exceptional craftsmanship. The Friedrich III Power Reserve is presented on an alligator leather strap with a pin buckle matching the case material, and is a limited edition of 25 pieces, available exclusively in 18ct rose gold or platinum 950. The rose-gold version is priced at EUR 58,900, while the platinum edition is EUR 63,500, both prices excluding taxes.
