Longines Revives the Iconic 42mm Legend Diver 59 with Enhanced Features
Longines has unveiled a modern reinterpretation of its iconic Legend Diver, the Legend Diver 59, reigniting the classic 42mm case size that originally defined the collection. This new iteration marries the beloved vintage design with contemporary engineering and an improved movement, catering to the desires of watch aficionados who favored the larger, date-free aesthetic.
Longines Legend Diver 59: A Classic Reborn
In a significant announcement for watch enthusiasts, Longines has officially launched the Legend Diver 59, marking the triumphant return of the original 42mm case size, a format highly cherished since its 1959 debut. This revamped timepiece, designated L3.795.4.59.9, is now available for purchase, priced at CHF 3,400 or EUR 4,000, and is a permanent addition to the brand's collection. The Legend Diver 59 is distinguished by its 42mm diameter and 12.85mm thickness, featuring a stainless steel case with a blend of brushed and polished finishes. It retains the signature dual screw-down crowns, with one at 2 o’clock controlling the internal bidirectional rotating diving bezel and the other at 4 o’clock for winding and time adjustment. A domed, box-style sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides protects the dial, while the angled screw-down caseback is adorned with an embossed diver emblem, ensuring both robustness and ergonomic comfort. Certified to ISO 6425 standards, the watch boasts an impressive 300-meter water resistance. The dial, a highlight of this release, comes in a lightly grained black finish, enhancing legibility over previous glossy versions. It features painted Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, complemented by elongated baton markers and a peripheral minute track. The rhodium-plated, sandblasted hands and numerals are filled with "old radium" Super-LumiNova for excellent visibility in low light conditions. Crucially, the absence of a date window restores the symmetrical and uncluttered purity of the original 1959 design, a detail that many purists will appreciate. Powering this elegant dive watch is the COSC-certified automatic calibre L888.6, an exclusive movement from Longines based on the ETA A31.L11. This movement operates at 25,200 vibrations per hour and offers a substantial 72-hour power reserve. It incorporates a silicon balance spring, providing enhanced resistance to magnetism in compliance with ISO 764 standards. The watch is presented on a robust stainless steel Milanese mesh bracelet, equipped with a double-folding clasp and a micro-adjustment system for a secure and comfortable fit. An additional black rubber strap with a diver’s pin buckle is also included, offering versatility for different occasions. This reintroduction underscores Longines' commitment to its rich heritage while integrating modern technological advancements to meet the demands of today's watch collectors.
The return of the 42mm Legend Diver, particularly without a date complication, is a testament to Longines' responsiveness to its community. It reinforces the idea that sometimes, staying true to a classic's purest form, while enhancing its technical underpinnings, is the most impactful approach. This model stands as a celebration of enduring design and functional excellence.
