Earlier this year, Minerva made a significant stride, emerging from Montblanc's influence to re-establish its distinct brand identity. This momentous occasion was celebrated with the release of two limited editions of the 'Unveiled Secret.' These watches, presented in a more accessible 39mm diameter, feature elegant wine-red highlights and a newly developed, in-house monopusher chronograph movement, inverted and openly displayed on the dial side. This design choice not only enhances wearability but also amplifies the visual delight of the intricate mechanics.

A Legacy of Precision: Minerva's Chronograph Heritage

Minerva, established in 1858 in Villeret, has long been revered for crafting some of the world's most exquisite chronograph calibers. The brand launched its inaugural chronograph movement, calibre 19-9, in 1908, initiating a rich tradition of producing finely finished stopwatches and chronographs. Montblanc, recognizing Minerva's profound chronograph legacy, introduced the original 'Unveiled Secret' in 2022. This piece featured a classic column-wheel monopusher chronograph, housed in a larger 43mm case, with its movement ingeniously inverted and showcased on the dial rather than through a traditional caseback.

Evolution in Design: The Compact 39mm 'Unveiled Secret'

Since its re-acquisition by the Richemont Group in 2006 to bolster Montblanc's watchmaking prowess, Minerva has now formally separated from Montblanc's dual-branding structure. Operating as an autonomous entity under Montblanc's parent management, Minerva celebrated its renewed independence in April 2026 by launching several single-branded models. Among these releases were the 'Unveiled Crownless' and the two compact, vibrant versions of the 'Unveiled Secret' explored here.

A Refined Caliber: The New M13.26 Movement

A key differentiation from earlier 43mm Montblanc 1858 'Unveiled Secret' models is the introduction of a more compact 39mm case, measuring 14.18mm in thickness, specifically designed to highlight the inverted movement. Furthermore, Minerva has developed an entirely new, patented manufacture movement for this 39mm iteration, replacing the larger 37.5mm calibre Minerva MB16.29, which was derived from pocket watch movements for the 43mm 'Unveiled Secret.'

Luxurious Details and Design Considerations

The collection includes a two-tone stainless steel model with a rose gold bezel, limited to 58 pieces, and a more opulent 18-piece edition entirely crafted from 18k rose gold, adorned with 84 brilliant-cut diamonds on its fixed bezel. Both variants maintain the distinctive fluting on the bezel, extending to the rose gold onion-shaped crown, which incorporates the monopusher. The Montblanc star on the crown has been replaced with Minerva's signature arrow, engraved in relief. While the 39mm case size aligns with contemporary preferences, the 14.18mm thickness for a hand-wound watch is noteworthy, though it is justified by the captivating visual display of the dial. An observation from the 'Unveiled Crownless' model regarding the position of the lug holes, resulting in somewhat sharp lug tips, is an area Minerva might address in future designs.

Both limited editions share a captivating wine-red color palette, visible on the flange and the three central rings of the dial. This infusion of color significantly improves readability compared to previous dual-branded inverted models. To ensure a clear view of the mechanics, a slender red flange with rose gold-plated indices supports three overlapping rings that gracefully hover over the dial's center. The central ring delineates the hour, minute, and chronograph seconds hands, flanked by a 30-minute totalizer with a white Minerva arrow-shaped hand on the left and a running seconds counter on the right. The vintage syringe-style hour and minute hands, along with the indices, are treated with white Super-LumiNova for superior legibility.

The Mechanical Marvel on Display

The intricate spectacle presented by the superimposed skeletonized elements of the dial is a testament to exceptional mechanical artistry. Activating the monopusher within the crown allows observers to witness the precise clicking of the steel chronograph levers and the rotation of the column wheel. Distinctive features, such as the "devil's tail" (Minerva arrow) chronograph lever at 1 o'clock and the iconic V-shaped Minerva bridge at 4 o'clock, proudly assert the watch's heritage. The prominent 11.4mm balance wheel, oscillating at a measured 18,000 vibrations per hour, is also visible from the dial side, adding to the dynamic visual experience. This manual-winding movement boasts a power reserve of 60 hours.

Exquisite Finishing and Caseback Design

The movement's mainplates and bridges are meticulously crafted from rhodium-plated German silver, also known as maillechort, and are hand-decorated with Geneva stripes and circular graining. Given that the primary mechanical display is on the dial, the rose gold or steel caseback is sealed and features a laser engraving of Minerva's historic manufacture in Villeret. The Minerva brand name is now depicted in relief at the twelve o'clock position, with no mention of Montblanc, further emphasizing its independent status.

Pricing and Availability of the Limited Editions

Both limited editions come with a wine-colored alligator leather strap, equipped with a triple-folding clasp that includes a fine-adjustment system, though it lacks a quick-change mechanism. The steel and rose gold variant, limited to 58 pieces, is priced at EUR 58,000, while the more exclusive 18-piece rose gold edition retails for EUR 88,000.
