Montblanc Unveils Exclusive Rose Gold Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph

Montblanc, a brand renowned for its luxurious writing instruments since its establishment in Hamburg in 1906, expanded into watchmaking in 1997. In a remarkable fusion of its two distinct worlds, Montblanc unveiled the Nicolas Rieussec chronograph in 2008. This innovative monopusher chronograph drew inspiration from an 1821 inking timing device. The company now presents an exclusive 100-piece limited edition crafted from elegant rose gold. This special edition features luminous inscriptions on its dial, derived from historical documents and references pertaining to master watchmaker Nicolas Rieussec's groundbreaking invention, celebrating both heritage and horological advancement.

Nicolas Rieussec's original timing mechanism underwent its inaugural trial at the Champ de Mars racetrack in Paris during 1821. It precisely recorded the horses' finish times by marking rotating counters with drops of ink from a fixed nib. This ingenious device garnered significant public attention and the approval of the Academy of Sciences, earning the name 'chronograph,' a portmanteau of the Greek words 'chronos' (time) and 'graphein' (to write). The new Montblanc timepiece honors this rich legacy by intricately displaying elements related to Rieussec's invention on its dial. Luminescent paint adorns the dark sections of the dial, replicating handwritten excerpts from the Academy of Sciences' official approval document, outlining the Academy's profile, depicting a blueprint of the original ink hand, and showcasing Rieussec's personal signature at the center.

In a nod to classical watchmaking aesthetics, the watch indicates time via a pristine white chapter ring adorned with black Roman numerals, complemented by a railway-style minutes track and rose gold-coated leaf hands. Two rotating, domed chronograph sub-dials, positioned to intersect the lower edge of the chapter ring, serve as a 60-second counter on the left and a 30-minute totalizer on the right. These sub-dials are visually unified by a blued steel, diamond-shaped bridge that functions as a pointer, effectively recreating the iconic layout of Rieussec’s historical chronograph.

This sophisticated chronograph also incorporates a dual-time function, featuring a skeletonized GMT hand cleverly hidden beneath the main hour hand. For travelers, the solid hour hand tracks local time, while the GMT hand can be easily adjusted in one-hour increments by rotating the crown. A day/night indicator is thoughtfully integrated into the white chapter ring at the 9 o'clock position. The GMT hand is synchronized with the date window, which is elegantly framed in a beveled rose gold-colored setting with two polished screws at 6 o'clock. Further commemorating the inventor, the raised rose gold-colored flange bears the inscription 'Compteur de Mr Rieussec' on the left side, with 'Paris, Le 15 Octobre 1821' inscribed opposite, marking the significant date.

The timepiece features a 43mm rose gold case, maintaining its distinctive pebble-like form and a substantial thickness of 15.01mm. A pocket-watch-inspired fluted onion crown, embellished with the Montblanc star emblem, is positioned at 3 o'clock, while a monopusher at 8 o'clock controls the chronograph's start, stop, and reset functions. The lugs exhibit a graceful curve and stepped design, with the entire case meticulously polished to a brilliant finish.

The transparent caseback reveals the intricate workings of the manufacture calibre MB R200, an automatic integrated chronograph movement equipped with a column wheel and vertical clutch. This movement, powered by twin barrels, boasts an impressive 72-hour power reserve, and its substantial 10mm balance wheel operates at a frequency of 4Hz. Engineered with globetrotters in mind, the GMT hand and date can be adjusted in both directions through a rapid-reset mechanism. The openworked rotor is adorned with a 'grain d'orge' engraving and features the iconic silhouette of the Montblanc star.

The watch is complemented by a black calfskin strap that tapers, reminiscent of a fountain pen nib, with the underside reproducing sections of an 1821 Parisian map. This exclusive timepiece is part of a limited edition of just 100 pieces, blending Montblanc's rich history in fine writing instruments with its prowess in haute horlogerie.
