Moritz Grossmann Hamatic Enamel: A Timeless Tribute to German Horology
Moritz Grossmann continues its celebration of founder Carl Moritz Grossmann's bicentennial, a figure instrumental in establishing Glashütte's esteemed reputation in German watchmaking. Following a series of anniversary models earlier this year, the brand now introduces a refreshed version of its unique Hamatic watch. This model is distinguished by its innovative pendulum-style hammer winding system, and for this special release, it features stunning jet-black enamel dials, presented in either 41mm rose gold or white gold cases. This timepiece beautifully blends historical reverence with contemporary horological artistry.
The Hamatic, originally introduced in 2018, draws inspiration from the earliest perpetual winding mechanisms found in 18th-century pocket watches. Instead of a traditional 360-degree rotor, the in-house calibre 106.0 utilizes a hammer with a solid gold mass, swinging in a short, pendulum-like arc to power the mainspring for a 72-hour reserve. Beyond its technical prowess, Moritz Grossmann prides itself on showcasing 'Schönstes deutsches Handwerk' – the most beautiful German craftsmanship. This commitment is evident in the jet-black enamel dial, achieved through a meticulous process of firing ground glass mixed with metal oxides at extreme temperatures multiple times, resulting in its rich luster and durability.
Further enhancing its appeal, the dial of this anniversary edition Hamatic features elegant applied white or rose gold Arabic numerals, a departure from the Roman numerals seen in previous versions. It retains classic elements such as a peripheral railway-style minutes track, a subtly recessed small seconds counter at 6 o'clock, and the brand's signature handmade, polished rose gold or steel hour and minute hands. A homage to the founder is also found in the M. Grossmann signature, which emulates an 1875 typeface. The watch's reverse side provides an intriguing view of the openworked pendulum-style hammer rotor, revealing intricate details of the movement, including the signature Saxon German silver 2/3 plate, Glashütte ribbing, raised gold chatons, violet-annealed screws, and a hand-engraved cantilevered balance cock that includes the year '1826' in honor of the founder. Operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, the movement incorporates an in-house Grossmann balance with four inertia and two poising screws. Limited to just eight watches in each metal, these 41mm gold cases, with a height of 11.35mm, are paired with hand-stitched alligator leather straps and gold prong buckles, retailing for EUR 63,500 (excluding tax).
The Moritz Grossmann Hamatic Enamel edition stands as a testament to enduring quality and innovative spirit in watchmaking. It exemplifies how respect for heritage, combined with relentless pursuit of excellence in craftsmanship and design, can produce not just a timepiece, but a piece of art that transcends generations. This watch is a celebration of precision, beauty, and the profound legacy of a visionary artisan, inspiring an appreciation for the meticulous dedication required to create such masterpieces.
