This groundbreaking announcement follows rigorous, separate investigations conducted by both esteemed laboratories, utilizing their own acquired reference samples to reach their conclusions.
The first hints of copper-bearing tourmaline emerging from Ethiopia began to surface within the gemstone trade earlier in 2026. The Gübelin Gem Lab encountered these unique specimens in early May 2026, noting that their chemical composition diverged from existing data associated with Brazilian, Mozambican, or Nigerian sources. Promptly, the lab amassed a collection of approximately 300 rough and cut stones from various independent suppliers, supplementing this with material personally gathered during a field visit to Ethiopia by a senior Gübelin gemologist.

These distinctive chemical characteristics are readily detectable using a high-quality ED-XRF system.
Dr. Peter Tollan, the Head of R&D at the Gübelin Gem Lab, remarked on the material’s unique chemical signature: “Despite significant and intricate chemical variations among individual samples, they collectively possess a remarkably distinct and consistent compositional fingerprint. This enables easy differentiation of Ethiopian samples from Paraíba tourmaline sourced elsewhere, without requiring advanced analytical techniques like LA-ICP-MS.” Dr. Aaron Palke, a GIA senior research manager, further affirmed the discovery’s impact, stating, “We can confidently designate Ethiopia as an origin on GIA Tourmaline Identification and Origin Reports. Both institutions plan to publish their complete findings in an upcoming edition of GIA’s quarterly journal, Gems & Gemology. They will also continue to augment their reference collections as more material becomes available.
