Pauline Karpidas's Exceptional Jewelry Collection Set for Auction at Sotheby's
A prominent figure in the British art scene, Pauline Karpidas, known for her discerning eye and patronage of contemporary artists, is offering a selection of her magnificent jewelry at auction. Over five decades, Karpidas has amassed an impressive array of artistic treasures, and now, 70 unique pieces from her personal jewelry collection will be presented by Sotheby's for sale.
This upcoming auction, scheduled for December in New York, follows a highly successful sale last year where Karpidas's Surrealist art collection achieved an astounding $137 million, setting a new benchmark for single-owner collections in London. The forthcoming jewelry sale is anticipated to fetch more than $10 million, reflecting the rarity and quality of the items.
Karpidas's jewelry assortment is a testament to her distinctive aesthetic, characterized by its audacious, whimsical, and diverse nature. Unlike collectors who follow market trends, she has consistently been drawn to singular, unconventional pieces that make a powerful statement. Her collection features bespoke creations from celebrated designers such as Joel Arthur Rosenthal (JAR) and Suzanne Belperron. It also includes vintage jewels from renowned houses like Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Jacques Lacloche, and Trabert & Hoeffer Mauboussin, alongside historical Art Deco items by Cartier, and an array of breathtaking colored gemstones.
Among the highlights is a remarkable JAR ring featuring a large pink diamond encased in a chalcedony setting, estimated at $2.5 million to $3.5 million. Another JAR piece, an intricate floral pendant necklace, showcases the designer's signature botanical style and is expected to sell for $250,000 to $350,000. A distinctive aquamarine and diamond necklace/brooch by Suzanne Belperron, originally designed as a brooch, demonstrates the designer's innovative approach and carries an estimate of $150,000 to $250,000. From Cartier, a pair of ruby boule bead earrings and a matching ring, acquired by Karpidas in 1987 from the Jewels of the Duchess of Windsor sale, are valued between $100,000 and $150,000. Finally, a striking rock crystal bracelet from 1945 by Seaman Schepps, which Karpidas purchased in 1988 from Andy Warhol's estate auction, is estimated at $50,000 to $70,000.
These exquisite pieces will be on public display at the Breuer from December 2nd, leading up to the dedicated live auction event on December 8th. The sale provides a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire exceptional items from a personal collection celebrated for its individuality and artistic merit.
