Silas Smith Crowned Victor of the 2025 MJSA Responsible Design Challenge

Silas Smith, the creative mind behind Meridian Metalworks in Los Angeles, has achieved top honors in the 2025 MJSA Responsible Design Challenge, an annual competition that shines a light on ethically sourced gemstones and offers vital support to mining communities. The challenge, a collaborative effort between MJSA and Columbia Gem House, based in Vancouver, Washington, invites designers to craft unique pieces based on a fictional client's narrative, utilizing a selection of Fair Trade and responsibly mined gems provided by Columbia Gem House.

This year's competition featured Matilda 'Tilly' Cleary, an Australian scientist with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, and showcased Lightning Ridge opals from New South Wales, alongside green and blue Australian sapphires. Smith's winning entry was an exquisite pendant that seamlessly blended Australian and American desert motifs, featuring a red rock formation, a yellow cactus, and a dark sky punctuated by an opal moon and scattered stars. This piece, along with others from the nine competing designers, was transformed from rendering to reality with materials supplied by Columbia Gem House, and subsequently entered into a charitable raffle dubbed 'Opals for Outback Heroes.' This successful fundraising effort garnered $6,900 (approximately $10,650 AUD), which was donated to the Lightning Ridge HQ Rural Fire Brigade, providing crucial support to the community at the source of these beautiful gemstones.
