Sinn 308 Hunting Watch: A Purpose-Built Timepiece for the Outdoors

Apr 08, 2026, 11:46 AM

Sinn, renowned for its highly specialized timepieces, unveils the 308 Hunting Watch at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026. This latest iteration of the Jagduhr, or Hunting Watch, distills the original chronograph's features into a more compact and essential design, catering specifically to outdoor pursuits. With a wrist-friendly 40mm diameter, the new model retains the distinctive olive green dial, pointer date, and moon phase display, emphasizing practicality and a refined aesthetic.

Sinn's dedication to crafting watches for particular needs is a cornerstone of its appeal among enthusiasts of robust timekeeping instruments. While some of their creations, like the EZM 12, cater to highly specialized professional fields such as the German Air Rescue Service with features like helicopter-inspired second hands for heart rate monitoring and innovative bezel systems, the Jagduhr series offers a distinct approach. It targets recreational hunters and outdoor adventurers, focusing on a robust build and specific functionalities without being part of the EZM professional mission timer collection. The brand's commitment to detail is evident, even if certain features, like 200-meter water resistance or an Ar de-humidifying capsule, might appear over-engineered for typical hunting scenarios.

The predecessor, the Sinn 3006, launched in 2017, aligned with the trends of its era by boasting a substantial 44mm case. Powered by a Concepto C99002 automatic chronograph movement, it offered an extensive array of functions, including chronograph capabilities for hours, minutes, and sub-seconds, a moonlight display, a 24-hour indicator, pointer date, and displays for month and day of the week. This comprehensive suite of features resulted in a densely packed dial, presenting a significant amount of information to the wearer.

The new 308 Hunting Watch pares down these complexities to its core elements, while preserving the distinctive aesthetic of its larger forerunner. Encased in a 40mm satinized stainless-steel body, it features a 12mm thickness and 20mm lug width. Its impressive resilience includes 200 meters of water resistance, Sinn's innovative Ar-dehumidifying technology, and sapphire crystals on both the front and back, complemented by a secure screw-down crown. However, the dial remains the focal point of its design.

The Sinn 308 showcases the familiar olive green dial from the 3006, now unencumbered by subdials. This simplification allows for the integration of a unique cross-hair motif, reminiscent of a rifle scope, which adds a compelling visual element to an otherwise understated design. A pointer date gracefully encircles the dial's edge, while hand-applied hybrid ceramic indices serve as hour markers. These, along with the hour and minute hands, are finished in an off-white ivory tone, creating a harmonious contrast with the green dial. This color palette is a deliberate choice, reflecting the natural hues of a forest environment, rather than an attempt to replicate a vintage aesthetic, similar to the practical color schemes seen in watches like the Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT.

The defining feature of the Sinn 308, establishing it as a hunting watch, is its moon phase display, or as Sinn terms it, a moonlight display. The underlying concept suggests that this function indicates when natural moonlight is sufficient for hunting activities, particularly when artificial light sources are prohibited, making reliance on ambient illumination critical. While the practical necessity of such a feature in an age where smartphones can provide similar information is debatable, it underscores Sinn's commitment to creating timepieces for highly specific, albeit niche, applications.

Driving the Sinn 308 and its distinctive moonlight functionality is the Sellita SW382-1 automatic movement. This caliber operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (28.8kbph) and provides a substantial 56-hour power reserve. Sinn's design choice ensures that the watch appeals to a wide array of outdoor enthusiasts, including hikers and nature lovers, regardless of their direct involvement in hunting. The Sinn 308 offers versatility in its strap options, including an H-link bracelet, an integrated silicone strap, or traditional leather or textile straps, with pricing commencing at €2,570 (including VAT).
