TAG Heuer Unveils New Formula 1 Chronograph with Gulf Livery
TAG Heuer's rich legacy is intrinsically linked with the world of automobile racing, often being the first brand that comes to mind when discussing motorsports timekeeping. Building on a heritage that began with Edouard Heuer's patented stopwatch in 1882 and the pioneering Time of Trip dashboard chronograph in 1911, the brand, under Jack Heuer in the 1960s, became the inaugural non-automotive sponsor of an F1 driver. This era also saw the birth of iconic racing-inspired models such as the Autavia, Carrera, and Monaco. To mark its renewed role as the Official Timekeeper of Formula 1, TAG Heuer has significantly updated its Formula 1 collection, launching the Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph x Gulf, which proudly displays Gulf Oil's signature blue and orange colors.
The latest iteration of the Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph brings notable enhancements, particularly in its construction and design. While retaining the dependable Calibre 16 automatic movement, the watch now features a robust yet lightweight grade 2 titanium case, moving away from stainless steel. This 44mm diameter, 14.1mm thick case is treated with sporty sandblasted and black DLC finishes, and its angular profile draws inspiration from the aerodynamic nose cones of F1 vehicles. The chronograph pushers have also been redesigned from round to rectangular, contributing to a more streamlined and modern appearance. The enduring partnership between Heuer and Gulf Oil dates back to 1971, immortalized by Steve McQueen wearing a Monaco chronograph in the film Le Mans while driving a Gulf-sponsored Porsche 917K. This long-standing alliance was formalized in 2018 with a global partnership, which has since led to several Gulf-themed Monaco editions and now, the striking Formula 1 collaboration.
The dial of this new chronograph masterfully incorporates Gulf's iconic aesthetic, with two prominent vertical orange and light-blue stripes gracing its right side. A distinctive design element is how these racing stripes extend beyond the central dial, subtly invading the peripheral track. The matte black chronograph subdials, featuring 30-minute and 12-hour totalizers at 12 and 6 o'clock respectively, are enhanced by vibrant orange hands. This bright orange hue is also present on the lacquered central chronograph seconds hand and the 5-minute markers on the flange. The running seconds counter at 9 o'clock boasts a light-blue hand, harmonizing with the blue lacquered chapter ring that delineates the 8 applied indices. Both the indices and the semi-openworked hour and minute hands are coated with white Super-LumiNova for enhanced readability. The date window, set within a black frame and featuring a white disc, cleverly cuts into the orange stripe, while the watch name and TAG Heuer shield are presented in white. The sandblasted titanium case, complemented by a matching titanium bracelet and black DLC-coated pushers and crown, offers 200m water resistance. It also includes an orange lacquered crown ring and an orange divider between the bezel and middle case. The fixed forged carbon bezel showcases a marbled effect, contrasted by white tachymeter markings. The alliance is further solidified by the inclusion of TAG Heuer's shield logo and 'Gulf' on both the bezel and the screw-down caseback medallion. Powering this timepiece is TAG Heuer's Calibre 16 automatic cam-activated chronograph, based on the reliable Sellita SW510 (a derivative of the Valjoux 7750 base). This movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a 42-hour power reserve. This Formula 1 x Gulf edition is limited to 1,000 pieces and will be available starting July 3, 2026, with a retail price of CHF 5,950, EUR 6,300, or USD 6,300.
This release from TAG Heuer is more than just a watch; it's a testament to the brand's enduring commitment to innovation and its storied partnership with the thrilling world of motor racing. It symbolizes precision, performance, and the seamless fusion of iconic heritage with modern design, inspiring enthusiasts to pursue excellence and embrace a spirit of dynamic progress.
