A Tribute to Jean-Marie Schaller: A Beacon of Humanity in Watchmaking

May 19, 2026, 11:47 PM

We mourn the passing of Jean-Marie Schaller, the brilliant mind and driving force behind the esteemed watch brand Louis Moinet. He departed peacefully on May 16th at the age of 66. This tribute aims to honor his memory, celebrating not only his significant contributions to the watch industry but also the profound human impact he had on those fortunate enough to know him. Jean-Marie was more than just a CEO; he embodied warmth, curiosity, and an authentic interest in people, setting a remarkable example in a business often focused solely on products.

My personal journey with Jean-Marie began in 2022 during a visit to his atelier in Saint-Blaise, Neuchâtel. Our discussions, while naturally touching on timepieces, design, and the rich history of Louis Moinet, invariably expanded to include personal anecdotes and shared interests. He possessed a rare ability to connect on a human level, always remembering details about my family, travels, and even my dog. These were not perfunctory pleasantries but genuine expressions of care and engagement. Over time, our professional association blossomed into a cherished friendship, marked by spontaneous video calls where he would often include his family and ask after my canine companion. These interactions were never driven by business agendas; they were simply heartfelt moments of human connection.

What truly distinguished Jean-Marie was his profound appreciation for the human element within the watch industry. In an arena that can sometimes be overshadowed by commercial objectives and new releases, he served as a vital reminder that this craft, and indeed this passion, is fundamentally built on relationships. His spirit perfectly encapsulated the finest aspects of horology: a blend of creativity, historical reverence, and meticulous craftsmanship, all underpinned by an immense warmth. Jean-Marie had a unique way of making everyone feel seen and heard, dedicating his full attention to every conversation, regardless of its subject matter. This seemingly simple trait is, regrettably, a rare commodity.

Reflecting on a past interview with Jean-Marie, a particular statement resonates deeply now: 'It is the heart that rules.' At the time, it eloquently expressed his vision for his brand. Today, it stands as an apt description of the man himself, a testament to his values and approach to life. His work in resurrecting the Louis Moinet name commands immense respect. He dedicated years to championing Louis Moinet’s crucial role in the history of the chronograph, driven by a fervent belief that this historical figure deserved proper recognition. Yet, Jean-Marie didn’t merely revive a name; he transformed Louis Moinet into a brand synonymous with vibrant color, intricate mechanical artistry, and boundless imagination. His timepieces were often imbued with a dramatic flair, always purposeful, mirroring his own dynamic personality. They exuded energy and character, embodying a clear vision without attempting to cater to every taste.

His unwavering passion was evident whenever he discussed the brand. It was deeply personal to him; he viewed himself as the steward of an invaluable piece of watchmaking history, feeling a profound responsibility to narrate its story. Beyond his professional endeavors, Jean-Marie was a devoted supporter of Arsenal Football Club. Despite my allegiance to Tottenham Hotspur, I found immense joy in our football discussions. These conversations, though brief, were always meaningful, highlighting his ability to infuse every interaction with personal warmth. Whether debating a watch, analyzing a match, or inquiring about family, he invested himself fully in the moment.

Jean-Marie Schaller will be remembered as a remarkable individual who brought profound warmth and humanity to every space he occupied. His exceptional character left an indelible mark on many, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have known him. He will be deeply missed by countless individuals within the watch industry and beyond. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Schaller family: Micaela, Raphaëlle, Dominique, Christopher, and Nathanaë
