Untapped Gold: Americans Hold Billions in Unappraised Jewelry
A recent study has shed light on a substantial, yet often overlooked, category of wealth within American households: unappraised gold jewelry. The findings indicate that homes across the United States collectively hold approximately $750 billion in gold metal value from jewelry that remains unassessed. This vast sum represents a significant portion of personal assets that many individuals may not fully realize they possess.
The research, conducted by Unvault as part of their Jewelry Drawer Index, compiled its estimates based on data from the World Gold Council. This data reveals that between 1995 and 2025, Americans acquired a staggering 7,050 tonnes of gold jewelry. A critical insight from the report is that roughly three-quarters of all fine jewelry purchases are never subsequently sold or recycled. Consequently, it is estimated that about 5,288 tonnes of physical gold are currently stored within residences nationwide.
One of the most striking revelations from the report concerns the disparity between the actual value of this gold and its owners' perceptions. On average, individuals tend to undervalue the current gold metal worth of their pieces by at least threefold. This lack of awareness contributes to another notable issue: nearly 66% of jewelry owners in the U.S. do not have insurance for their precious items, primarily due to either outdated appraisals or the complete absence of any assessment. This exposes a considerable risk for households in the event of loss or damage.
Geographically, the report also identified variations in the concentration of gold value. The national average stands at an impressive $5,700 in gold value per household. Among individual states, New Jersey takes the lead with an average of $8,784 per household, followed closely by Connecticut, California, Maryland, and Massachusetts, all demonstrating higher-than-average holdings.
This comprehensive analysis underscores a widespread pattern of undervaluing and underinsuring precious gold jewelry within American homes. The substantial $750 billion figure serves as a potent reminder of the hidden wealth and potential financial security that often goes unacknowledged. Addressing this oversight through updated appraisals and appropriate insurance coverage could significantly benefit countless households.
