August Jewelry Sales See 5% Increase, Driven by Higher Transaction Values

Sep 03, 2026, 11:52 PM

Independent jewelry retailers witnessed a 5% surge in gross sales during August compared to the previous year, a remarkable achievement given an 8% reduction in the volume of items sold. This growth was predominantly fueled by a significant uplift in the average value per transaction, as highlighted by the latest monthly retail data from Edge Retail Academy.

The academy's analysis indicates that the average retail sale climbed by 14% relative to August of the prior year. This substantial increase in transaction value was instrumental in maintaining positive sales growth, even as the number of individual units sold decreased. This trend suggests a market where consumers are prioritizing higher-value purchases, rather than an expansion driven by increased unit volume.

Among the various categories, diamond jewelry emerged as the top performer, with sales rising by 8% year-over-year, despite a 9% dip in units sold. The average retail sale for diamond pieces increased by an impressive 18%, underscoring the strong consumer preference for higher-end diamond items. Similarly, colored stones and pearl jewelry also saw their gross sales improve by 4%. Despite a 14% decrease in unit sales within this category, a 21% increase in the average retail sale propelled its overall growth. In contrast, sterling silver and alternative metals faced difficulties, experiencing a 5% drop in gross sales and a 19% fall in unit sales. Although the average retail sale for these items grew by 17%, it was insufficient to offset the weaker sales volume.

The August report paints a picture of a jewelry market that, while showing positive growth, is softer than the previous year. For ongoing success, retailers are encouraged to prioritize customer engagement through targeted communications, service reminders, special events, and appointment scheduling. By concentrating on cultivating strong transaction values and fostering consistent business activity, the industry can navigate this evolving retail landscape and achieve sustained prosperity. The insights from Edge Retail Academy, derived from comprehensive data across numerous independent U.S. jewelers, emphasize the importance of strategic customer relationship management in a value-driven market.
