The Business of Watches Podcast: Collective Horology CEO Asher Rapkin and Liberty Justice Center Chairman Sara Albrecht on Suing Over Tariffs

Aug 05, 2026, 6:25 PM

This week on The Business of Watches podcast, we welcome Asher Rapkin, co-founder and CEO of Collective Horology, and his attorney, Sara Albrecht, Chairman and CEO of The Liberty Justice Center. Their discussion focuses on a significant legal challenge against government-imposed tariffs.

Collective Horology, an independent retailer based in Ventura, California, specializes in independent watch brands such as Armin Strom, Czapek, Fears, Ming, and J.N. Shapiro. Sara Albrecht leads The Liberty Justice Center, a non-profit legal firm known for its successful challenge against the initial round of tariffs imposed by the previous administration. The Supreme Court's unexpected decision ruled that the President lacked the authority to levy duties that increased the cost of imported goods, including Swiss-made watches. This ruling led to the government's ongoing process of refunding approximately $166 billion to affected businesses.

However, the government promptly introduced new tariffs, imposing duties of 10% and 12.5% on imported goods, including Swiss-made watches, effective July 24. This action prompted Collective Horology, alongside another importer specializing in exotic spices, to file a new lawsuit against the President and several administrative bodies and individuals, including U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Rapkin shares his company's motivations for challenging these tariff laws, while Albrecht outlines the legal strategy behind their case. This issue holds significant economic importance for American businesses and the global watch industry.

This episode delves into the details of the watch business, strategic decisions, and the legal battle's potential impact on the industry. It's a testament to the pursuit of justice and fairness in commerce, highlighting how individual businesses and legal advocates can stand up against perceived overreach and advocate for economic principles that benefit all. This ongoing effort reflects a commitment to a transparent and equitable marketplace.
