Fortis Stratoliner S-41: A New Era of Space-Tested Timepieces

Fortis has launched a new series of four Stratoliner S-41 Chronograph watches, continuing its tradition of producing resilient timepieces for space adventurers. In an era where private space travel is burgeoning, these models emerge, showcasing innovative design and proven durability. Notably, one of these new additions introduces a distinct aesthetic that is sure to capture attention.

Departing from the conventional approach of ground-testing before space missions, Fortis initially propelled its Werk 17 movement into the stratosphere for rigorous evaluation before integrating it into the Stratoliner line in 2022. That same year, the brand elevated its commitment further by sending thirteen Stratoliner watches on a Swedish research rocket into suborbital space, subjecting them to intense G-forces, immense stress, and considerable impact upon landing. This extensive testing underscores Fortis's dedication to creating instruments capable of enduring the most extreme environments.

The new line of chronographs maintains the robust tool-watch philosophy with a 41mm diameter case, measuring 15mm in thickness and 51mm lug-to-lug, ensuring a commanding presence and exceptional durability. The watches are water-resistant up to 200m, suitable for a variety of challenging conditions. The case, available in recycled stainless steel, DLC-coated steel, or a limited-edition steel version with an 18k gold bezel, features an industrial brushed finish, practical screwed lugs, and piston pushers, complemented by a flat bezel. A screw-down crown with a triple gasket system and a rubber/gold gasket between the bezel and the case middle further enhance its resilience.

While the models exhibit diverse color palettes and dial textures, they all share the distinctive character of the Stratoliner, which might require some acclimatization. The classic tri-compax layout includes running seconds at 9 o'clock, a 30-minute counter at 12 o'clock, and a 12-hour totalizer at 6 o'clock. A notable design element is the blue or gold highlighting on the right side of the two chronograph counters, mirroring the 180-degree section of the minutes track, all enhanced with blue or green Super-LumiNova. Additionally, the day-and-date display is conveniently located at 3 o'clock.

The Stratoliner Reentry Edition features a captivating dial, drawing inspiration from the fiery re-entry of a spacecraft into Earth's atmosphere. Each titanium dial is meticulously hand-crafted, undergoing compression and exposure to open flame to achieve a unique blend of copper and violet hues, along with occasional scorch marks. This edition is paired with Fortis's sturdy steel Block bracelet, equipped with a folding clasp and a micro-adjustment system.

The Stratoliner Gravity Black model showcases a darker dial that complements its black DLC-coated case, which boasts a surface hardness of 4,500 Vickers—20 times that of standard steel. The dark grey stardust dial contrasts sharply with white indicators and light blue Super-LumiNova accents on the right half of the dial. This variant is offered with a black hybrid FKM rubber and textile strap.

The limited-edition Stratoliner Supernova Cool Gray and Cosmic Gray models, each restricted to 13 pieces, are housed in steel cases accented with an 18k gold ring on the bezel and gold details on the dial. Both feature stardust-textured dials in either dark or light grey, gold-plated hour and minute hands, and green-emitting Super-LumiNova. Similar to the Reentry Edition, these models come with the robust Block bracelet.

The caseback reveals the Werk 17 calibre, an automatic column-wheel chronograph meticulously developed and enhanced by La Joux-Perret. Based on the Valjoux 7750 architecture, LJP has re-engineered and reinforced the bridges, incorporating tangential micro-screw regulation for superior robustness. A small porthole in the sapphire crystal offers a view of the column wheel. After being tested by the Swedish Space Corporation in the stratosphere and then in suborbital space, this movement is certified to maintain accuracy for 60 hours.

The latest Fortis Stratoliner S-41 collection not only demonstrates advanced horological engineering but also a deep commitment to space exploration, embodying the spirit of discovery and resilience.
