GIA to Enhance Gemological Reports and Origin Services for Colored Stones

Dec 10, 2025, 8:46 PM

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has announced significant enhancements to its colored stone reporting and services, effective January 1, 2026. These updates include a sophisticated redesign of their gemological reports and an expansion of their origin-determination offerings. This strategic move aims to provide the gemstone trade and consumers with more detailed and accessible information, ultimately enriching the narrative surrounding each unique gem.

The upcoming reports will feature a modern, elevated design, making critical gemological data more intuitive and easier to understand. This visual upgrade is intended to highlight the distinct characteristics of each colored stone, bringing its individual story to the forefront for clearer communication between buyers and sellers.

A key aspect of this initiative is the broadening of origin-determination services. GIA will now offer country-of-origin identification for opal, peridot, and demantoid garnet. This adds to their existing comprehensive services for alexandrite, emerald, Paraíba tourmaline, red spinel, ruby, and sapphire, as well as their recent inclusion of untreated jadeite and omphacite jade from Myanmar (Burma) and Guatemala.

Shane McClure, Global Director of Colored Stone Services, emphasized that these expanded services are built upon GIA's vast research and an extensive collection of 32,000 samples gathered by their field gemologists. He noted that GIA's colored stone reporting tradition spans over 75 years, during which researchers and gemologists have developed unparalleled expertise. This deep knowledge, coupled with GIA's enduring commitment to scientific research, forms the bedrock of the reliability and accuracy of their report results.

In conjunction with these service enhancements, GIA will also adjust its weight categories and corresponding fees for colored stone submissions. The detailed new weight and fee structure will be made available on GIA's official website starting January 1, 2026, and will apply to all items submitted on or after that date. These items will subsequently receive the newly redesigned and enhanced reports.

These upcoming changes underscore GIA's continuous dedication to advancing gemological science and ensuring transparency within the global gemstone market. By providing more insightful reports and broader origin information, GIA aims to strengthen consumer confidence and support the ethical trade of colored gemstones worldwide.
