IWC Ingenieur SL Commemorates 50 Years with New Automatic Models

In September 2026, IWC Schaffhausen proudly unveiled two special editions of its Ingenieur Automatic line, marking the 50th anniversary of the Ingenieur SL, a design icon from the masterful hands of Gérald Genta. The original Ingenieur, first launched in 1955 as an anti-magnetic watch for professionals, was reimagined by Genta in 1976 as the Ingenieur SL, or "Steel Line." This celebrated model featured an integrated steel bracelet, a bezel secured by five screws, and a textured dial, setting a new aesthetic standard that would influence the collection for decades. Although not an immediate commercial hit, with only 598 pieces produced between 1976 and 1983, the Ingenieur SL gained significant appreciation over time.

For this golden jubilee, IWC presents the Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary (Reference IW328910) and the Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary (Reference IW324909). The 40mm model, which we had the opportunity to examine firsthand, measures 40mm in diameter and 10.8mm in thickness, while its 35mm counterpart is 35mm across and 9.4mm thick. Both timepieces feature brushed silver-plated dials, a nod to a rare silver-dialed variant of the original Ingenieur SL. Rhodium-plated hands and applied hour markers are meticulously filled with Super-LumiNova for enhanced legibility. A subtle "50" marking replaces the traditional lightning-bolt logo, signifying the special occasion.

These anniversary editions retain the characteristic round bezel with five visible screws and an integrated stainless-steel bracelet. The finishing on these models showcases a blend of brushed and polished surfaces, with the 40mm version primarily featuring a satin-finished bracelet, while the 35mm variant includes polished middle links. Both watches are equipped with a convex sapphire crystal, treated with anti-reflective coating on both sides, and offer water resistance up to 10 bar.

Powering the 40mm model is IWC's automatic Caliber 32111, operating at 4Hz and boasting an impressive 120-hour power reserve. This movement is housed within a soft-iron inner case, providing robust protection against magnetic fields, echoing the groundbreaking anti-magnetic properties of the original SL 1832. The 35mm model utilizes the IWC Caliber 47110, derived from the Cartier 1847 MC, which also runs at 4Hz and offers a 42-hour power reserve. This smaller model uniquely features a sapphire case back, allowing a view into its meticulously finished movement and gold-plated rotor. Both calibers display hours, minutes, and date functions. The 40mm Ingenieur Automatic is priced at €14,700, and the 35mm model at €12,800, with the price difference mainly attributable to their distinct movements. Each anniversary model is limited to 1150 pieces, further enhancing their exclusivity.

The introduction of two size options for the 50th Anniversary Ingenieur Automatic is a thoughtful decision by IWC, acknowledging the varied preferences of watch enthusiasts.
