Igniting Innovation: "The Design Dynamic" Invites African Talent to Reimagine Jewellery's Future

A Global Call for African Creativity in Jewellery Design

The Jewellery and Gemstone Association of Africa (JGAA) has rolled out its second major design contest, dubbed "The Design Dynamic." This initiative is a worldwide invitation to individuals of African heritage, including those residing in Canada and the United States, to put forth groundbreaking designs. The competition seeks to highlight a vibrant and inclusive vision for the African jewellery sector.

Fusing Heritage with Contemporary Artistry

This contest presents an unparalleled opportunity for designers to intertwine ancestral traditions with contemporary artistic expressions. Participants are encouraged to honor their cultural legacies while contributing to a collective heritage. The event is a collaborative effort, brought to life through partnerships with Africa Jewellery Week™ Limited, GemGenève, and Digital Jewelry Week, alongside media backing from Jewellery Afrika (South Africa) and Jewellery Editor (UK).

Diverse Categories for Artistic Expression

"The Design Dynamic" encompasses three distinct categories for fine jewellery design: hand-drawn concepts, computer-aided design (CAD), and the intricate art of gouache painting. The inclusion of the gouache category is particularly noteworthy, recognizing its esteemed status within top jewellery houses and its artistic value. This specific segment invites both established jewellers and visual artists of African descent to explore jewellery design through the expressive medium of gouache.

Showcasing African Gemstones and Talent

Submissions will be evaluated based on their imaginative application of African gemstones and their inherent qualities. This platform is specifically designed to enable Canadian artists of African origin to demonstrate their skills and artistic vision. The competition's overarching goal is to transform perceptions surrounding African jewellery, bringing its creativity and innovation to the forefront.

Global Exposure and Professional Development for Winners

The culmination of "The Design Dynamic" will be the Africa Birdlife Collection (ABC), a series inspired by African avifauna. Two winning entries from each category will earn a showcase at GemGenève 2026, with the completed physical pieces slated for an exhibition in 2027. Winners are set to receive a comprehensive prize package, including design materials, manufacturing assistance, and business guidance. They will also benefit from the promotion of the ABC collection and a year-long spotlight on the ABC collective. Furthermore, victors will collaborate with JGAA's partners to transform their designs into tangible creations, thereby empowering the next generation of African jewellery designers and boosting their global market presence. The submission period for entries concludes on March 1, 2026. For further details, please reach out to: Enquiries@jgaa.africa.
