Kiwame Tokyo Unveils the Kubo Series: A Homage to Japanese Aesthetics in Horology

Jun 09, 2026, 8:55 AM
Kiwame Tokyo, a notable Japanese microbrand established by industry veteran Masami Watanabe in 2025, proudly presents its latest offering: the Kubo series. Embodying the brand's philosophy of "honest watchmaking," these timepieces are crafted with a commitment to timeless design, superior finishes, and accessible pricing. The Kubo collection draws inspiration from Japan's profound appreciation for the interplay of light and shadow, delivering a dress watch experience that is both sophisticated and understated.

Experience the Art of Subtlety: Kiwame Tokyo's Kubo Series

The Essence of Kubo: Celebrating Depth and Shadow in Design

The Kubo series, Kiwame Tokyo's fourth distinct collection, derives its name from the Japanese term for "hollow" or "recessed space." This nomenclature aptly describes the collection's core design principle: to highlight the subtle variations in depth that create captivating shadow play. Following the vintage-inspired aesthetics of its predecessors — the Kurotsuki, Usuki, and Mune families — the Kubo series maintains the classic elegance of a dress watch. It stands as the brand's most compact model to date, featuring a refined 37mm diameter, a slim 9.3mm height (10.7mm including the domed sapphire crystal), and a comfortable 45mm lug-to-lug measurement.

Robust Elegance: The Refined Steel Casing of the Kubo Timepiece

The steel case of the Kubo series showcases a thoughtful blend of textures. Its flanks and bezel are adorned with a vertical brushed finish, offering a practical and contemporary appeal. In contrast, the top surfaces of the case and the sides of the flat bezel boast polished accents, adding a touch of traditional elegance. While many dress watches opt for an entirely polished aesthetic, the Kubo's predominant brushed finishes enhance its durability, making it suitable for daily wear without compromising its sophisticated charm.

The Dial's Mystique: A Dance of Light and Shadow

Echoing the Japanese reverence for the interaction of light and shadow, the dial of the Kubo series is a testament to minimalist artistry. A subtly recessed small seconds counter is positioned off-center at 4:30. The absence of a peripheral seconds track allows the depression of the small seconds to command attention, animated by a hand featuring the brand's distinctive counterweight — a miniature representation of the iconic Kaminarimon Gate roof in Asakusa. A unique detail on the pink Sakura model is the delicate outline of a cherry blossom flower etched within its small seconds counter, adding a poetic touch to its design.

Vibrant Hues and Luminous Details: Dial Variations and Legibility

The Kubo series offers a selection of glossy lacquered dials in three exquisite colors: the gentle pink Sakura, the deep navy blue Tetsukon, and the classic ivory Usuki. These dials are designed to softly reflect light, enhancing their visual depth. The hours are marked by applied Breguet-style Arabic numerals, complemented by diamond-shaped indicators at five-minute intervals. The Sakura and Usuki models feature green luminescent triangles at the cardinal points (12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock), while the Tetsukon model boasts twelve individual luminescent markers. All three versions are equipped with syringe-shaped hour and minute hands, filled with blue luminescent material for optimal legibility in various lighting conditions.

Precision and Practicality: Movement and Accessibility

Powering the Kubo collection is the reliable Miyota 82S5 automatic movement, operating at a frequency of 3Hz and offering a 42-hour power reserve. While a sealed caseback protects the movement, the watches provide a practical 30m water resistance. Each timepiece is paired with an Italian calfskin leather strap, fitted with convenient quick-release spring bars. Maintaining its commitment to accessibility, the Kubo series is retailed at a very competitive price of USD 630 (excluding tax). Pre-orders are scheduled to commence on June 21, 2026, at 11:00 AM (JST), with deliveries anticipated by the end of July.
