Secondary Market Gold Watch Prices Decline, Presenting Buying Opportunity

Jul 10, 2026, 6:19 PM

The market for pre-owned gold timepieces has recently experienced a notable price reduction, marking a significant shift for luxury watch enthusiasts. According to findings from the Bloomberg Subdial Index, which monitors the top 50 most actively traded watches by value, gold models have seen a consistent decrease in cost since April. This trend suggests a potential window of opportunity for individuals looking to acquire high-end gold watches, especially after a period of rising values.

Specifically, the Rolex Daytona Oysterflex, a highly sought-after gold model, has witnessed a 4% dip in its secondary market price, now trading around $34,700. This is considerably lower than its new retail price of $42,700, which varies based on dial configurations. Other iconic Rolex timepieces, such as the Day-Date 40 President and the standard Day-Date, are also among the 13 gold models tracked by the index that have experienced this downward adjustment. This current downturn contrasts sharply with the year 2025, when the same collection of gold watches recorded a 9% increase in value.

The broader economic landscape, particularly the price of gold bullion, has played a crucial role in shaping these market dynamics. Gold prices had previously reached unprecedented highs in 2025, partly due to tariff policies enacted by former President Donald Trump. However, bullion costs have since decreased by over 20% following the onset of the conflict with Iran in February. These fluctuations in the raw material's value directly influence the pricing strategies and market perceptions of gold watches.

Despite the recent price adjustments, leading luxury watch brands such as Rolex and Patek Philippe continue to dominate the pre-owned market. Alexander Nussbacher, head of data at Subdial, emphasizes that demand remains strong for "iconic brands and historic models, with real craft and quality." Although the overall growth in the pre-owned sector's top 10 timepieces has been a modest 2%, five of these are gold watches, underscoring their enduring appeal and significance within the luxury market.

The secondary watch market is currently navigating a period of interesting changes. Following a boom driven by the Covid-19 pandemic, the market entered a new phase in the final quarter of 2025. A report from WatchCharts earlier this year indicated a 4.9% overall growth in secondary prices, primarily fueled by models from Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet. With gold watch prices now declining, industry observers are keen to see how these trends will influence the market's trajectory for the remainder of the year and what new opportunities or challenges may emerge for collectors and investors alike.
