IWC Celebrates 50 Years of Ingenieur SL with Limited Edition Automatic Watches

IWC Schaffhausen is celebrating a significant milestone: the 50th anniversary of its groundbreaking Ingenieur SL timepiece, originally conceived by the legendary designer Gérald Genta. To mark this occasion, the renowned watchmaker has unveiled two exclusive limited-edition Ingenieur Automatic watches. These new releases, available in 40mm and 35mm diameters, meticulously re-imagine the essence of the 1976 original, seamlessly fusing heritage with contemporary precision engineering.

IWC Unveils Ingenieur Automatic Limited Editions: A Nod to Gérald Genta's Legacy

In a grand celebration of horological history, IWC Schaffhausen has introduced two limited-edition Ingenieur Automatic watches, paying homage to the 50th anniversary of the iconic Ingenieur SL. Designed by the visionary Gérald Genta in 1976, the Ingenieur SL pioneered the integrated sports watch aesthetic. The new models, designated IW328910 (40mm) and IW324909 (35mm), embody this legacy with striking vertical brushed silver-plated dials, a departure from the current grid-patterned Ingenieur lineup. This design choice is directly inspired by a rare 1970s Ingenieur SL Jumbo variant.

Both anniversary timepieces feature robust stainless steel cases with the characteristic integrated bracelet, fixed bezels, and functional screws. The 40mm model distinguishes itself with a soft-iron inner case and a solid caseback, a practical tribute to the Ingenieur’s original purpose of combating magnetic fields. In contrast, the 35mm version showcases its intricate mechanics through a sapphire crystal caseback. Both watches maintain an impressive water resistance of 100 meters, blending elegance with durability.

Underneath their distinguished exteriors, these watches house distinct movements. The 40mm Ingenieur is powered by the IWC-manufactured Calibre 32111 automatic movement, boasting an impressive 120-hour (five-day) power reserve and a pawl-winding system for superior efficiency. The 35mm counterpart features the Calibre 47110 automatic movement, offering a 42-hour power reserve. This movement, based on the Cartier 1847 MC, is visible through its sapphire caseback, revealing a gold-colored central rotor and sophisticated finishing.

The dials of both watches are adorned with rhodium-plated applied hour markers and hands, enhanced with Super-LumiNova inserts for optimal legibility. A framed date window at 3 o'clock integrates seamlessly into the design; on the 40mm model, it subtly intersects the hour marker, while on the 35mm, it replaces it entirely. Each model is limited to an exclusive production run of 1,150 pieces, with pricing set at EUR 12,800 for the 35mm edition and EUR 14,700 for the 40mm.
